O VMA deste ano teve um significado todo especial. Devido à pandemia do coronavírus, a premiação, que usualmente reúne centenas de pessoas envolvidas em sua produção, além de fãs, artistas, entre outros, precisou ser repensada. A 37ª edição da cerimônia – uma das mais importantes do cenário musical – desta vez aconteceu em diversos locais icônicos da cidade de Nova York, homenageando o espírito e a resiliência da cidade, que foi amplamente afetada pela Covid-19.

Com performances de The Weeknd, Doja Cat, BTS, Miley Cyrus e um medley de tirar o fôlego do álbum “Chromatica”, com a participação de Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga foi a grande vencedora da noite, com cinco prêmios. Já The Weeknd ficou com o prêmio principal de Vídeo do Ano para o mega hit “Blinding Lights”.
Gaga recebeu ainda o primeiro TRICON Award, pela excelência em sua carreira. O prêmio é uma repaginação do Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, renomeado depois das polêmicas envolvendo o nome do artista.
